Dr. Valerie Tan

BHSc (Community Health Development), PGDipHSc (Health Behaviour Change), BChiro

I discovered Chiropractic when I was 21 and it literally turned my life around. I had been suffering from chronic headaches, abdominal pain, menstrual dysfunction, acne, and more. After countless tests, exams and what felt like hundreds of medications, I was ready to give up. It was by chance I stumbled upon Chiropractic and within a few months of care, I was a new person. I had no idea that by simply restoring proper function to the nervous system, that my own body had the power to recreate the health I had thought was long gone.

My background is in community health development and health behaviour change, but chiropractic is my life passion. Nothing brings me more joy than watching people and their families’ lives transform as their body heals, recovers function they forgot they had, and they learn to make better choices for themselves in the lives they lead. I love seeing entire families but have a particular interest in pregnancy and paediatric chiropractic care. I love encouraging mothers to trust in both their own bodies and their newborns’ as they are brought into the world. I have learnt that the human body is incredibly intelligent, and I love witnessing people thrive under care.

Chiropractic has become a norm in my life now, it is a health choice I make to keep me and my family functioning as perfectly as we are designed to. I know there are some of you out there that feel like you’re just getting by. I know there are some of you that also feel fine. Many of you have no idea that either way, you could function and feel so much better in yourself. I believe everyone deserves to experience true health and I hope to provide you with regular chiropractic care to assist in unleashing that potential.

Unlike many, I have grown up with chiropractic all my life. I have not known life without it. With two parents for chiropractors, and then eventually pursuing chiropractic myself, I have had my spine and nervous system checked and adjusted regularly from the day I was born. To be honest, I envied my fellow students who had miracle chiropractic stories that changed their lives, inspiring them to follow chiropractic as a life-long career. I felt like I missed out on that. I guess you could say, I took it for granted.

When I was younger and in school, I would question how healthy I really was. My body didn’t seem to tolerate the many things that my peers dabbled with. Coffee. Cigarettes. Alcohol. I would get a sore throat or start to feel sick in other ways. I tested my body’s limits and wound up with glandular fever. Chronic fatigue syndrome. I had migraines and headaches. Yes, chiropractic may have helped me through all those things, BUT if I was truly healthy, I thought – why would I suffer ill health at all? It hasn’t been until recent times that I feel like I understand health and my body better.

I look back and now I see how intelligent my body was. A medication free, nutritious and active upbringing, as well as a fully functioning nervous system, though chiropractic, seemed to have helped me maintain a clear awareness of my body – one that communicated freely and letting me know when I was harming it. It would fight back when I overloaded it with toxins and stress. Telling me when to stop. Telling me if it was too much. Telling me if I was pushing it too hard.

Now that I am well into my adult years, I realise how grateful I can be for growing up with an understanding for the natural power and health of the body. It seems to have paid off and I feel like I’m doing pretty well health-wise for my age. It excites me to offer chiropractic to all of you. To have it benefit you, the way it has benefited me. It’s not a quick fix approach to health. In my 18 years in practice, I have learnt that although there are short term benefits – the real benefits are seen over time.

I look forward to providing you with the very best of chiropractic care.
